Nearly 20 years ago, I was watching an episode of "Late Show" with David Letterman. He was doing his weekly "Know Your Current Events" segment where he selected audience members to ask them a question about a comedic current event.
The first person he chose was a striking, well-dressed and articulate woman. She stood up and introduced herself. David Letterman commented immediately saying, "Wow! You're stunning. Are you a model?"
"No, I do Public Relations for the Gap,” she said. I was sold. She represented everything I admired and everything I wanted to be. The next day, I circled “Public Relations” on my early college admissions packet, and have stuck with the profession ever since.
PR WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT... AND BEYOND
Working in Public Relations offers me the chance to act as an advocate for brands and bring their stories to life to be shared with media, influencers and most importantly – consumers.
I’ve had the opportunity to work for some of the top agencies in the world including Weber Shandwick, JSH&A PR and Hill+Knowlton Strategies. I’ve conducted media relations and event planning for well-known consumer food, beverage and beauty brands including got milk?, The Hershey Company, ConAgra Foods, Mars, Unilever, Bertolli and more.
Working as an independent consultant allowed me the chance to build campaigns, conduct product launches and plan events from fashion shows and galas to outdoor hot-spot gatherings within nonprofit, fashion, education, food and tourism industries.
I welcome the opportunity to apply my PR knowledge to new industries as I believe the goal remains the same – “Who are we trying to reach? and “What are we trying to say or make happen?”
THE LADY FROM "LATE SHOW"
Last year I was able to track down the lovely PR woman interviewed by David Letterman years ago to thank her for being such an inspiration for me. I’m happy to report she is still enjoying working in Public Relations for a major retail brand.
WHY THE NAME?
K-Lu (pronounced "KAY LOO") was a nickname I had growing up. It was the inspiration for KLu PR.
